Antoni Tàpies Fundation

Antoni Tàpies Fundation (71)

When you get close, you will immediately recognise this building. You will see a beautiful modernist building which stands out not just for its current location but also for the curious metal cables and wire sculpture on the top like a strange hat – a work named Cloud and Chair.

The building, which dates from 1885, is the work of the famous architect Doménech i Montaner and was the head office of a former publishing company: Montaner and Simon, whose activity is symbolically recorded in the sculpted busts and in the names of literary figures placed around the façade.

The building was completely restored and reconditioned by architects Roser Amadó and Lluís Domènech Girbau. The Antoni Tàpies Foundation was created in 1984 by the artist to promote the study and knowledge of modern and contemporary art.

You would never have imagined that the combination of modernist and industrial styles could work so well together- In fact, the bare brickwork, stained glass windows and ironwork create a pleasant environment on the inside. It is a perfect place for exhibiting art or for any other kind of cultural event. You are sure to find something new there.

It is one of the few truly “living” museums. Within it, and this is the artist’s intention, art exhibitions are combined with temporary exhibitions, symposia, conferences, , auditions, cinema cycles... there is always something new on.

The permanent collection is formed mainly by works donated by Antoni and Teresa Tàpies, but it grows every year, and is therefore always different.

On the other hand, if you have time, you can visit the splendid specialist library of modern and contemporary art, where the old shelves of the original publisher are still used.

It also houses the most extensive archive of Tàpies’ work, as well as collections of Asian, Pre-Columbian, African and Oceanic arts and culture.
