Montjuïc

Montjuïc (83)

The best views of Barcelona can bee seen from two of the highest points. One of these is Tibidabo and the other, in the extreme south-west, is Montjuïc.

As well as large garden areas, you’ll find palaces, sports stadiums and other installations which you cannot miss. Architecture, art, culture, sport, leisure and fun all come together in a single place: Montjuïc.

The mountain of Montjuïc has experienced two major transformations – the first during the 1929 International Exhibition and the second during the celebration of the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992.

There is a castle at the top and, together with Tibidabo, it is one of the mountains which define Barcelona.

The mountain of Montjuïc was first built on in 1872, based on the urban studies of Ildefons Cerdà. Montjuïc was always an unpopular mountain as it has been home to the cemetery for time immemorial – its name actually comes from Mont Jueu or Jewish mountain, because tradition has it that the Jewish cemetery was located there.

A few years later a pre-project was presented which was the beginning of a process to regain the mountain for the city of Barcelona, as a place for public use.

The 1929 International Exhibition in Barcelona was a great event for the city, and left us with a large number of palaces, pavilions and constructions of all kinds.
