Island of Museums

Island of Museums (15)

You will arrive at the Island of Museums from Unter den Linden by crossing the impressive ´Schlosbruke`, or ´Castle Bridge`.

And if you are a fan of museums, you have definitely come to the right place. Although this is also the perfect place to enjoy lovely views, have a stroll or relax on the grass.

The Island of Museums is the name given to the northern half of the Spreeinsel, an island situated in the river Spree. As you will have guessed, the name is derived from the museums located here, all of which are important from an international perspective. Its value is incalculable, and in 1999 the island was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.

It was all started by the architect Schinkel, who thought that the area was an ideal place for a grand museum. In 1825 construction work was started, however the result was seen as rather small. Therefore King William Frederick IV decided to dedicate the whole zone to the arts and sciences, and in 1843 work on the New Museum was started. There was still enough space afterwards for other collections, so in 1930 three more large museums were built.

Museums found on the island today are the Altes and Neues Museums, the Museum of Pergamo, Bode-Museum and the Alte National Gallery.

The whole island is being remodelled, and will not be completed until 2015.
