Galerie Bortier

Galerie Bortier (37)

If you are a literature lover, a visit to this place is a must. Indeed, Galerie Bortier is the only shopping centre in Belgium devoted exclusively to book and map shops.

The shopping arcade was designed by the architect Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar, who also undertook the famous Galeries Saint-Hubert. This building was completed in 1848 and was given this name because it had been erected on a plot formerly owned by Monsieur Pierre-Louise-Antoine Bortier, who was also the driving force behind this project.

You will notice that the shopping arcade is covered by a vaulted glass roof, finished in wrought iron, that provides natural light along its 65-metre length. You will also see its Renaissance-inspired decoration, which was restored in 1977.

Both sides of the passageway are lined with a multitude of shops that specialise in all kinds of modern, old and second-hand books. This makes the place a meeting and gathering point for students and researchers, and for literature lovers in general.
