Théâtre Royal de Toone

Théâtre Royal de Toone (12)

The Toone Puppet Theatre is located in a small alley off the Petite Rue des Bouchers, in a building that operates as a lively tavern during the day and stages puppet shows at night. So, if you go during the day, do not forget to enjoy the regular food of the venue: a sandwich covered with melted cheese, nicely accompanied by a beer.

It was in the times of the Spanish government that all the city’s theatres were closed in order to stop actors from staging performances satirising the rulers of the time. This was precisely how the puppet shows began.

Later, in 1830, Antoine Toone opened this theatre, which has remained in the hands of his family since then. These small dolls appear here every day in very light versions of the great classics. Bear in mind, also, that these works are normally staged in Brusseleer, the dialect spoken in Brussels. Do not forget, either, that the theatre also has a small museum, which is interesting, particularly if you are travelling with little ones.
