Municipal Park (Városliget)

Municipal Park (Városliget) (38)

The Municipal Park is one of the most popular green spaces in Budapest. It measures one square kilometre and was the site for the majority of the Hungarian Millennium celebrations held in 1896.

You can enjoy a relaxing afternoon walk here or take advantage of the various attractions, some of which are especially suited to children.

Among many of the attractions located in the park is a small lake where you can go boating in the summer or ice-skating in the winter. In the centre sits the Vajdahunyad Castle, built in 1896, whose gardens contain the Romanic Ják Chapel. Behind it, you will also find the Agriculture Museum. The castle is home to one of the city’s most important statues: the Anonymous hooded figure, an unknown chronicler from the court of King Bela III who recounted the history of the first Magyars. You will see there is an inscription stating ´Notary of glorious King Bela` and that in his hand is a brilliantly pointed feather which, according to legend, inspires anyone who touches it.

Another of the important statues found in the park is that of George Washington, which was built in 1906 by Americans of Hungarian origin.

The park is also home to the city’s zoo, which contains three thousand, seven hundred animals, including a section known as the ´Puppy Nursery` where recently born species are looked after. Other attractions include the secessionist style animal homes from the beginning of the 20th century, like the ´Elephants’ House` or ´Palm Tree House`, built by the company belonging to Gustave Eiffel.

Close to the zoo are the Municipal Circus and Attraction Park, which are both as antiquated as they are decadent and remain popular to visitors. There is also the Transport Museum on the park’s Southeast corner, where you will find models of old trains, wooden bicycles and late 19th century cars.

What’s more, there are two more well-known places located here: the renowned and select Gundel Restaurant and splendid Széchenyi Thermal Baths.
