Bica Elevator Tram

Bica Elevator Tram (1C)

The history of this tram, which travels between the Sao Paulo district, near the “Cais do Sodré” station, to Bairro Alto, started in 1892, the date of its inauguration.

The Bica Elevator tram, designed by Frenchman Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, was named a national monument in 2002.

Because of this and the wide views it allows of the Tajo on its climb to street named “Rúa do Loreto”, along a street lined with small houses, bars and traditional shops, to ride the “Ascensor da Bica” (Bica Lift), as it says at the last station, is highly recommended.
