Archaeological Museum

Archaeological Museum (24A)

The only part of the church “do Carmo” that was left standing after the earthquake was the chancel. This space currently portrays centuries of history in the Archaeological Museum.

The museum houses a small but interesting collection, noted perhaps for its diversity.

You can see here ancient European pieces, like a Roman tomb with embossed muse patterns, and a Visigoth pillar, as well as archaeological items from South America, including several mommies.

There are even on display items dating back to Portugal’s Palaeolithic and Neolithic times, such as a collection of sarcophaguses, statues, ceramics and mosaics.
