Carnegie Hall

Carnegie Hall (96)

It was in 1891 when Tchaikovsky himself conducted some of his works for the opening of this famous New York concert hall, famous throughout the world. Of course, it is one of the most emblematic places of the city. For its history, for its beauty, for its acoustics and because the most important classical musicians have spent time here.

Carnegie Hall was designed by William Burnet Tuthill and although not the most famous of the city, it is a flawless project. The truth is that great efforts were made, perhaps because classical music and cello were his passion. And it was the famous Andrew Carnegie who put up the money to build this immense concert hall.

The building is built in stone and its ochre exterior is brick with terracotta decorations and Moorish details, added after completion. Once inside, notice the elegant entrance, evoking the Tuscan style of Brunelleschi with white plaster and grey stone arches and Corinthian columns forming under a beautiful vaulted ceiling. It is exquisitely beautiful.

With its 2,804 seats, Carnegie Hall is one of the best halls in the world in which the world's most prestigious orchestras and soloists have played such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and Bob Dylan, among others. It was even one of the top concert halls in the United States in which the Beatles performed.

From 1991, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Carnegie Hall, the small Rose Museum was incorporated, which contains passionate memories from history such as the baton of Arturo Toscanini, Benny Goodman's clarinet, the 1964 Beatles programme with their autographs and many signed photographs, posters, recordings and other valuables.

If you have time, you may get lucky and find a free seat to a concert during your stay in New York. Although as a rule, they are so popular that the almost 3,000 seats often sell out quickly. Although Carnegie Hall has other smaller rooms in which concerts of great interest are held. Do not forget to check the showtimes.

Or if you are traveling with children, find out about concerts for children. There are informal and popular sessions with various performers that promote classical music among the little ones. They are most entertaining.
