DIA Art Foundation

DIA Art Foundation (54)

DIA, in Greek, is a preposition meaning "through". And that is precisely the role of the Dia Art Foundation: to allow certain large artistic projects or ambitions to be realised and exhibited. And so, today it is internationally recognised as one of the most influential institutions of contemporary art.

Its founders were Heiner Friedrich and Philippa de Menail and, from the outset, it wanted to violate the convictions of a traditional museum to meet the need for the new generation of artists that emerged mainly during the 60s and 70s.

In addition to the always very interesting proposals for temporary exhibitions, it has a magnificent permanent collection compiled especially in the 70s and 80s including magnificent works by artists like Joseph Beuys, Walter de Maria, Dan Flavin, Blanky Palermo, Richard Serra, Andy Warhol and Robert Whitman, among others.

If you are interested in its art, visit other Dia centre inside and outside of Manhattan, each more interesting, because often the works of such artists need to be deployed in specific locations. From iconic buildings, a forest or the Hudson River itself.

And one last tip: do not miss the roof where you will find a huge glass sculpture that offers 3D reflections of the city's skyline. Surprising.
