Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden

Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden (105)

This old house is located in what were once the grounds of Colonel William Stephens Smith in the 18th century. Originally a home for transporting stone for Mount Vernon, Virginia, where George Washington had his residence.

Over the years, in 1826, part of the main house was damaged by a fire and what remained was acquired by Joseph Hart, who converted it into the Mount Vernon Hotel, where New Yorkers escape in search of a rural environment. Although the business lasted just a few years and was sold and re-sold, until in 1924 when the Colonial Dames of America Association acquired it.

So, after magnificent restoration work returned it to its former glory, it opened as a museum in 1939, to coincide with the Universal Exhibition of New York in the same year. It was the Abigail Adams Smith House.

Relatively recently, since 2000, the museum regained its origins and was renamed the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden. Undoubtedly, today it is one of the most beautiful New York works of the 18th century.

Furniture and other pieces from federal and Empire periods are exhibited here. It is also worth noting its lovely garden, which recalls the exuberance of Bourgeois gardens of the 18th century.

In summer, concerts and other performances are held outdoors. Stay tuned to their activities. Attending these events is a real privilege.
