New York Historical Society

New York Historical Society (102)

Founded in 1804 by great personalities of the city who strove to preserve their history and their stories, the New York Historical Society is the oldest museum in New York and also an enviable research library.

The building which contains its headquarters today is a 1908 work of architects York and Sawyer, built in Neoclassical style. Its various collections contain more than six million works of art, literature, decorative objects and other pieces of great interest to an ordinary day in the life of any New Yorker.

Among them, don't miss the excellent watercolour naturalist John James Audubon illustrating birds of the United States; the archives of the architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, creators of the General Post Office, among other notable buildings; one of the most complete collections of Louis Comfort Tiffany lamps; more than half a million photographs of New York ranging from 1850 to today; as well as other items with an intimate historical and social value, such as advertising posters and postcards.

If you are traveling with children you will love the permanent exhibition called Kid City, where you can immerse yourself in the history of urban development in New York with the representation of a West Side street in the early 20th century.

The old museum has been able to reflect the heartbeat of the city that never sleeps.
