Radio City Music Hall

Radio City Music Hall (89)

There are many reasons to visit the Radio City Music Hall, but there are three that will make you want to do so immediately: it is one of the jewels of the Rockefeller Center, it is an Art Deco masterpiece, and it is the largest theatre in the United States.

Opened in 1932, the Radio City Music Hall houses an amazing auditorium with a stage 20 metres deep and 44 metres wide, as well as around 6,000 seats.

Attending a live concert, an event or one of the large gatherings that happen hear at Christmas and Easter is a true experience. But really, the show starts as soon as you step through its main entrance. You will find before you a real art déco masterpiece, designed by Donald Deskey, who rejected the rococo style used in theatres back then and opted for a design based on glass, aluminium, chrome and geometric shapes. Numerous painters also contributed to the completion of this magnificent work of art, with various frescoes that still decorate the lobbies, halls and stairways of this auditorium to this day.

At its inception, the Radio City Music Hall organised film screenings that it combined with the fabulous choreographies of the Rockettes, the famous dance troupe that is known for their legendary and still-popular Radio City Christmas Spectacular performance.

In 1979, the theatre was declared a monument of national interest and all its decorative elements were classified as historical monuments. Twenty years later, in 1999, the theatre saw the completion of a reform that cost 70 million dollars; the reform was well liked by the public at large because, among other things, it recovered the original ornate and colourful lobby.

If you want to know more about the history of this jewel of New York theatre, we suggest you go on the guided tour organised by the Radio City Music Hall itself. The tour lasts about an hour.
