Con 41 plantas y 156 metros de altura, el International Building parece ser el hermano pequeño del GE y alberga la sede de diferentes compañías internacionales e incluso de varios consulados.

De todas formas, además de su vestíbulo revestido de mármol griego y sus diferentes y bellas entradas con relieves art deco, probablemente lo más destacable de este edificio sea la célebre estatua del Atlas que hallarás en su lado que da a la Quinta Avenida, frente a la Saint Patrick’s Cathedral o Catedral de San Patricio. Sin duda es una de las fotografías que no pueden faltar en tu álbum de la ciudad de Nueva York.

Instalada aquí en 1937, es una bella obra art deco en bronce que simboliza al antiguo titán griego aguantando el firmamento, obra del escultor Lee Lawrie con la colaboración de Rene Paul Chambellan. Con sus 7 toneladas de peso y casi 14 metros de altura total es la escultura más grande del Rockefeller Center y uno de los símbolos del complejo. Te gustará saber que, además, el eje norte-sur de la esfera señala directamente la la Estrella Polar, vista desde Nueva York, claro.

Si has estado paseando por el Rockefeller Center, una buena idea es dirigirte ahora hacia la Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. Si no, ve directo hacia la Lower Plaza, desde donde podrás ver otra cara del International Building, con una obra excepcional firmada también por Lee Lawrie.
