Es curioso como esta pequeña calle de poco más de 600 metros, menos de media milla, ha llegado a ser tan conocida alrededor de todo el mundo. Wall Street nace en Broadway, junto a la súper retratada Trinity Church, y corre hacia el este hasta el río East y es mundialmente conocida por ser sinónimo de gran ajetreo, de ejecutivos agresivos, de mucho estrés y de mucho dinero. Sin duda, estás en el verdadero corazón histórico de Nueva York y el centro mundial del capitalismo.

El nombre de Wall Street, calle de la pared, tiene un curioso origen, cuando este era el límite de New Amsterdam, el asentamiento holandés del siglo XVII. Fue Peter Stuyvesant quien mandó levantar una empalizada de madera y lodo para protegerse de los posibles ataques de los nativos americanos y de los británicos, aunque desgraciadamente era utilizada básicamente para que los esclavos africanos no escaparan. Auque ya en 1699 los británicos mandaron derribarla, el nombre de Wall Street sigue recordando esta pared.

Hoy es un placer pasear por esta estrecha calle y, además de observar las idas y venidas de los ejecutivos, es interesantísimo admirar el contraste arquitectónico de sus edificios. Aquí conviven grandes rascacielos con edificios clásicos de pocas plantas. Por ejemplo, una de las fotografías típicas más repetidas por los turistas es la Trinity Church flanqueada por los altos edificios de Wall Street. No puede faltar en tu álbum.
