Via Condotti

Via Condotti (38)

Any great designer worth their salt has a shop in the Via Condotti. This is because this elegant street is the heart of the major labels in fashion, and all the top Italian labels have a shop here or in the adjoining streets. It could be said that it is the Italian equivalent of Fifth Avenue in New York.

Here you will find the shops of Armani, Versace, Valentino or Prada. Also very well-represented are shops selling leather goods and shoes, as well as works of art and decorative objects.

As you would imagine, however, the prices are not exactly cheap, even during the sales. Despite this, in the afternoon the Via Condotti is full of elegant women and suited men, who mix with the inevitable avalanche of tourists.

The name of the street has its origin in the conduits that channelled the water to the Baths of Agrippa, close to the Pantheon.

Among the many stately mansions you will see, of particular note is the church of the Santa Trinità degli Spagnoli, which contains frescos by Velázquez in the apse and the cupola. Further along, at number 86, you will come to the mythical Café Greco, where artists of the time met, such as Keats, Goethe and Stendhal.
