Pinacoteca Nazionale

Pinacoteca Nazionale (8)

Located in the Palazzo Buonsignori, the Pinacoteca Nazionale is one of the largest in the country, as it houses a sample of Sienese painting throughout a period of 500 years.

Specifically, the most interesting pieces are those belonging to the Scuola di Siena, to which artists such as Duccio, Pietro Lorenzetti and Simone Martini belonged. This school was initially inspired by Byzantine art, appropriating the lush colours, gold and stylised figures. Its importance was such that some of its works clearly influenced artists from other European countries, such as Holland and England.

Among the most important paintings you cannot miss are "The Descent," by Sodoma, "Two Views," by Lorenzetti, and "The Adoration of the Shepherds," by Domenico.
