Singapore Grand Prix

Singapore Grand Prix (1D)

You've heard of Singapore for its spectacular Formula 1 race.

But few know that the city’s first race was held in 1966 on the Thomson Road route, and that races were held here until 1973. At that time, these races were not part of the Formula 1 calendar, but of the Free Formula, a form of competition where you are allowed to race different types of vehicles.

It was a decision made by the International Automobile Federation in late 2007, that brought a new event to Singapore. It would host a night time F1 race, the first ever.

The track is called Marina Bay and is entirely urban. It is over 5 kilometers long and to aspire to the podium you must do 61 counter clockwise laps. The cars go full speed through the middle of the city: the Anderson Bridge, St Andrews Road, Raffles Boulevard and Republic Avenue. You have probably already walked through these places to go shopping or to visit historic sites, right?  If you haven’t, you soon will.

In its first edition, held from 26 to 28 September 2008, the winner of the Singapore Grand Prix was the Spanish Fernando Alonso at Renault, who not only became the first winner of the race but also the first winner of a night race.
