The Battle Box

The Battle Box (51)

Here, underground, is one of the key places in Singapore’s history. It is on this very spot that the British decided to surrender on the morning of 15 February 1942. You're in the Battle Box, the largest bunker underneath Fort Canning Park, about 9 meters underground and bomb-proof.

This bunker was used by the British Malaya Command during the Second World War and has more than 20 rooms linked by a winding corridor.

After World War II the bunker was buried and forgotten but its location was rediscovered in 1988 and it became an ideal place for both an enjoyable and educational visit. Of course nowadays these rooms and tunnels are fully upgraded and ready for tourism.

So it will be easy to arrange for a visit to the different areas where you can see the communication systems of this period as well as General Percival’s hall.  You can also see a hall used for British military strategy and even the place where the British made the decision to surrender. In these rooms you will find re-enactments and visual effects that will help you relive those important moments in Singapore’s history.

There is also a small museum and souvenir shop. It is a visit we highly recommend.
