Museum of Modern Art (Mumok)

Museum of Modern Art (Mumok) (39)

The Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, which, for obvious practical reasons, everyone refers to by the acronym MUMOK, houses one of the most comprehensive and priceless collections of modern and contemporary art in Europe.

Its royal, somewhat provocative appearance, virtually devoid of windows and covered with a layer of dark grey basalt, is one of the most recognizable images of the main courtyard of the vast MuseumsQuartier. Designed by the innovative architectural firm Ortner & Ortner, the building was erected between 1998 and 2000.

The museum stands as the ideal place in Vienna for visitors to acquaint themselves with the paths currently being taken by contemporary art and to discover where these paths are headed, and its collection occupies five stories, comprising a total an exhibition space of 4500 square metres.

The list of authors and movements represented in the 7000 works housed by the museum is impressive, and collections range from the early avant-garde movements of Cubism, Surrealism and Futurism to more contemporary forms such as Pop Art, New Realism or the Fluxus group.

Another strong point of the museum is its emphasis on the Viennese Actionism movement, with works by Günter Brus, Otto Muehl, Hermann Nitsch and Rudolf Schwarzkogler.

In addition, MUMOK, true to its commitment to 21st-century art, continues to add new pieces to its collection and in the future hopes to offer its facilities as a showcase for the latest trends in disciplines such as photography and video art.

Visitors to its rooms will enjoy a fascinating tour of works by such legendary creators as Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and Nam June Paik.

On a lesser note, visitors should also be aware that the museum cafe offers an excellent menu that combines Austrian specialties with international cuisine, striving to offer a reflection of the multicultural melting pot that is the MuseumsQuartier, the cultural complex that houses the MUMOK. Where cooking becomes art.
